Chris Dlouhy - Assistant Coach

I have been a member of Okanagan Freestyle Fencing since it first started in 2008, and have thoroughly enjoyed every practice for those 8 years. Matt's positive and encouraging attitude and coaching style have helped me to grow as both an athlete and a person, and I can't imagine my life without fencing. The environment of the club supports both competitive and casual approaches to the sport, and is a fantastic place to learn fencing.

Fynn Fafard - Cadet and Nation Team Member 2017

Matt Clark does a great job of making fencing fun and interesting while still helping his fencers progress and learn about the sport. One of my first competitions was in Vernon and Matt and the whole fencing community were so friendly and welcoming and really helped me get excited about fencing. He puts his all into teaching his fencers everything he knows about fencing and sharing his love of the sport. I think that Vernon is really lucky to have a coach like Matt.

Riley Norman - National Youth Champion 2013

I've had the pleasure of fencing with Matt both at his camps offered at Okanagan Freestyle Fencing; at provincial level competitions and workshops; and national level tournaments. As an out of province fencer, Matt welcomed me to his club and made me feel part of the team. He went out of his way to make sure that I was included and I met many great friends through this club. Matt and I both participated at a world cup event in Vancouver; and Matt has served as both a competitor and mentor for me at both provincial and national tournaments. Okanagan Freestyle Fencing is a welcoming environment with an enthusiastic leader. Matt is especially encouraging with beginners, and has a wealth of knowledge to share about the sport he is passionate about. Matt ensures the primary focus at his fencing club is fun, and recognizes the individual strengths and talents of his students. Club members often find long lasting friendship with team mates at the club. Both beginners and high-performance athletes will find motivation and activities that cater to their level. Matt is always positive and is admired for his upbeat personality and fun-loving demeanor. Matt has taken fencers to the national level and has himself participated at an international level. Matt encourages people to follow their dreams, and give guidance and support not only in fencing, but in life.
Fencers joining Okanagan Freestyle Fencing can be assured of quality instruction, positive role-models, challenging physical activity and tons of fun. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend coach Matt Clarke and Okanagan Freestyle Fencing to anyone wishing to learn a new sport in a positive environment.
